Junior High students at Mercy Montessori recently returned from a class trip to St. Augustine, Florida via Tennessee and Georgia. Mercy’s 7th and 8th grade student government researched possible class trip sites, presented their recommendations to classmates and voted as a group on their final trip destination. Students independently planned the majority of their travel details, including lodging and points of interest; they are producing a class DVD documenting their journey. The organization of their class trip is a concrete example of the research skills, independence and leadership fostered by the Montessori method of education. Junior high children participate in a week of educational travel every other year. Continue to read the story here: http://local.cincinnati.com/share/story/201429

Nearly 200 local runners and walkers participated in the 34th Mercy Metric race held Labor Day morning at the Lunken Airport Playfield. Despite heavy rains due to the remnants of Hurricane Isaac, athletes, spectators and volunteers turned out for this annual 10K/5K Run, 5K Walk and Kids Fun Run. The Mercy Metric benefits the comprehensive athletic programming at Mercy Montessori and was coordinated by Don Connolly, Inc., well-known race management specialists for the Greater Cincinnati Area.

The 2012 Race Chair was Kreg Keesee of Hyde Park. “Despite torrential rains, the school community was out in full force to ensure that the event was a success. A special thank you to our event sponsors and those volunteers and runners/walkers who braved the elements,” stated Keesee. Race proceeds support the soccer, swimming, volleyball, basketball and track and field teams available to students. Mercy Montessori is a private, Catholic, Montessori school located in East Walnut Hills and serves children ages 3 through 8th grade.

2012 Gold Sponsors of the race were Accenture and Paycor. Additional Race Sponsors were Mom Corps, Select Integrations, Inc. and Utopian Fitness, with added assistance from John Morrell & Co. and Orange Leaf. Race logos and designs were provided by Trey Walker of Brand Evolutions.

Mercy Montessori students, faculty and parents enjoyed an all-school celebration honoring the opening of the first House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland on September 24, 1827 by Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. The program involved a reenactment of the life of Catherine McAuley, written and performed by junior high students, as well as a sing-a-long. Colorful peace mobiles, designed by each classroom during art classes and created for the assembly, are currently on display throughout the school. A food drive was also held to support the Mercy Neighborhood Ministries Food Pantry.

The assembly and food collection were organized by the school’s 7th and 8th grade children, along with Sr. Aloyse Gerharstein RSM of East Walnut Hills. “Sister Aloyse has been involved with the school since its earliest days in 1969 and her creativity and enthusiasm are a true blessing to our students and everyone involved with Mercy Montessori. She exemplifies the charism of the Sisters of Mercy,” remarks assistant principal Kevin Vance of Mt. Lookout. Mercy Day is celebrated locally and globally by the Sisters of Mercy and Sisters of Mercy sponsored institutions.
