Junior High Begins an Ambitious Year of Community Service

Every other Wednesday the junior high attends three different service projects: Camp Stepping Stones, Gorman Farm, and Senior Services with Mercy Neighborhood Ministries. “These are all engaging and important experiences for our junior high students,” reflects Lisa Klus, Mercy’s Assistant Principal. The farm work is based around Maria Montessori’s dynamic Erdkinder concept, which calls for adolescent children to continue to expand their broad skill base and critical thinking, while increasing their sense of society by spending time in an agricultural environment. The variety of service opportunities was designed so that each child could immerse him or herself in different settings. Parents assist with the transportation and the students have enjoyed this unique, ongoing chance to take their learning outside of 2335 Grandview Avenue.
