Basketball
Mercy basketball is open to all boys and girls in Levels 3-8. Teams play within the CYO. The girls’ season is in the Fall (September-October). Practice typically begins in late-August. The boys play between early-December and late-January. Practice typically begins in November.
Age Eligibility & Divisions
Mercy typically fields five boys basketball teams (one team in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th levels). The girls sometimes combine two grade levels (for instance a combined 4th-5th level team).
Practices are held in the Mercy gym or facilities close to the Mercy campus. Games are held at various locations (none at Mercy). Teams typically practice twice a week (1 1/2 hours per practice). There are 10 games in the season plus a tournament.
Currently, the registration fee is $50 per player per season.
Soccer
Soccer is the largest sport at Mercy Montessori. Approximately 120 Mercy students play soccer each school year. The school participates in both the Fall and Spring seasons in Soccer Association Youth (SAY). The Fall season begins in early-September and runs through October. The Spring season runs from early-April through May. Practices generally start several weeks before both seasons. Player registration takes place in January for the Spring season and in May for the Fall season.
Age Eligibility & Divisions
SAY Soccer is based upon a player’s age as of July 31 in the current year, not what grade they are in. Here are the SAY divisions:
Passers (ages 6-7), Wings (ages 8-9), Strikers (ages 10-11) and Kickers (ages 12-13)
Mercy typically fields one or two teams per season (boys and girls) at the passer level. At the Wings, Strikers and Kicker levels, Mercy usually fields one boys team and one girls team at each level.
Soccer Excitement Day/Player Registration
Soccer Excitement Day is a time when parents and players can register for spring soccer, get information, have fun, win prizes and get free soccer stuff. It is typically held in January in the school cafeteria or gym. Highlights include:
- Local training coaches from SAY National come to demonstrate and teach cool soccer moves!
- Every person who comes receives free soccer goodies such as wristbands and water bottles!
- Every person who comes is in a free raffle for larger items (like awesome soccer balls)!
- Register that day for spring soccer and get your questions answered by Mercy soccer coaches who will be attendance

Swimming
Mercy Montessori children begin swimming lessons at age 3.
The Mercy swim team is open to Mercy boys and girls from levels 1-8. More than 50 children participate in the program each year. Mercy swimming is under the direction of longtime Athletic Director Tom Grant, who was inducted in the Miami University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 following a record-setting college career. Tom won nine Mid-American conference championships (six individual titles and three championship relays). He teaches competitive skills within the Mercy swim program. If you are a parent and wonder if your child is ready, just ask Tom and he will be happy to provide you guidance.
The Season
Practice typically begins in early-November. The season runs through the final week of February. There are three meets: one per month in December, January and February. They take place at the Krueck Center behind Hughes High School.
Mercy swimmers can compete in up to three events per meet (including relays).
Practice is held twice per week in the Mercy pool. First through third levels (boys and girls) practice Monday’s and Wednesday’s. Fourth through eighth level practice on Tuesday and Thursday’s. Practice begins immediately after school and concludes at 4:30 p.m. The meets last approximately 2 1/2 hours and take place on Saturday or Sunday (with an occasional Friday evening meet).
Track & Field
Track and Field at Mercy is open to boys and girls levels 4th-8th. Mercy competes in the CYO.
The Season
Meets begin after Easter and run through late-May. There are typically four to five meets per season plus the CYO Championship.
Practices are held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays beginning after school and ending at 5:00 p.m. Practices are held in the Mercy auxillary parking lot (upper car line) or in the Mercy gym when there is bad weather.
There is a need for more Mercy parents to help with the meets. Please contact Tom Grant for more information.
Volleyball
Volleyball is offered to all girls at Mercy in Levels 4-8. There will be two teams this year representing Mercy in the CYO League.
Age Eligibility and Teams
Girls in levels 4-6 will be coached by Sharon Eddingfield. Practices for this team will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00 – 6:30 in our gym.
Girls in Levels 6-8 are currently coached by Mary Gaffey and assisted by parent volunteers. Practices for this team will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 – 8:30 in our gym.
